Higgins Butchers and Il Piacere Cafe

What do one of the most established butcher shops in Dublin and a first class cafe have in common? A robust passion for good food and… the same address!

Higgins Butcher is not a new discovery for those dubliner foodies who are particularly careful about their supplier. Well, you need to know that Higgins Butcher has added a new string to it’s bow.

Reviewed by McKenna’s guide and Georgina Campbell, this long-established butcher shop in Sutton Cross is currently ran by the fourth generation of the Higgins Family.

Browsing their counter is a real joy for the eyes thanks to the freshness and the wide selection of different kind meat that they offer to their customers. One can’t forgot about the curing chamber with the impressive range of homemade italian style cured meats (including a stunning barolo salami!)

Well, if all this would not be enough for a pleasant stop on your next stroll to Howth, it now boasts a cafe corner with inside and outside tables, freshly baptized “il Piacere”, that serves one of the best cappuccino you can find in the Dublin area (creamy and NOT foamy, exactly how it should be done!).

Rick Higgins, the present generation of the family, has indeed a remarkable passion for italian food (the quality italian products sold in the shop are a testament to this) and has wisely chosen as a manager for “Il Piacere” Valentina Di Giorgio, an italian barista with a solid experience despite her young age.

Together with excellent capuccinos and espresso (prepared with the italian blend Hausbrandt) at this cafe you will find the high-end cakes and desserts by Sweet Sicily pastry shop such as cannoli, eclairs and pistachio sponge.

Moreover, Valentina gives to the counter her personal touch with a selection of classic homemade cakes which change everyday such as lemon drizzle and cupcakes and even a sicilian twist with her paste di mandorla (almond biscuits).

So, in the same premises you have a well known butcher shop, an impressive range of grocery products (with a good quota of italian ones), artisanal homemade salami and a small lovely cafè which will let you feel for a moment like you are sitting at a table of a sunny square in the South of Italy.

You can’t ask for more!

PS: If you follow my suggestion and decide to drop by in Sutton Cross don’t forget to bring home some of Higgins multi award winning Italian style sausages.
